Pioneering role to boost active travel in Shetland

Call to drive lasting impact in local communities

SCOTLAND’S walking charity is breaking new ground with the creation of a first-of-its-kind regional Development Officer position in Shetland.

The role marks a significant step for Paths for All’s commitment to tailoring its initiatives to meet the unique needs of Scotland’s diverse communities.

Aimed at increasing active travel in Shetland, the Development Officer will spearhead a brand-new project focusing on workplace programmes, in conjunction with the Regional Transport Partnerships, ZetTrans.

“This is an exciting opportunity for us to make a real difference in Shetland.” said Graham McQueen, Manager at Paths for All.

“By having a dedicated presence in the region, we can better understand and address the specific challenges and opportunities for active travel in island communities.

“Paths for All is committed to reaching every corner of the country with our mission to promote walking, wheeling and active travel.”

The Development Officer will be responsible for conducting workplace assessments to identify barriers to active travel, developing targeted opportunities and incentives to encourage walking, implementing programs such as the Step Count Challenge, and recruiting and supporting volunteer workplace champions.

Working closely with key partners such as NHS Shetland and Shetland Islands Council, this role will be instrumental in promoting healthier, more active lifestyles across the islands.

The initiatives promoted by this new role are expected to bring numerous benefits to Shetland. Active travel can significantly improve the health and wellbeing of residents, reducing the risk of chronic diseases and enhancing mental health.

Additionally, by encouraging more walking and cycling, these programs will contribute to reduced carbon emissions, supporting Shetland’s environmental goals.

Through active travel, business can expect to see increased productivity and improved employee morale because of a more active and engaged workforce.

This comprehensive approach aims to create lasting change in how Shetland residents’ approach daily travel and physical activity.

This new role aligns with Paths for All’s vision of making Scotland a true walking nation, where everyone has the opportunity to be active every day, creating a happier, healthier, and greener Scotland.

For more information about this position or to apply, visit Paths for All’s website or please contact Graham McQueen at graham.mcqueen@pathsforall.org.uk or call 07717 683217. Applications close on Friday 26th July.

Paths for All works to create more opportunities and better environments for everyone in Scotland, no matter who they are or where they live, to stay active through walking, wheeling, scooting or cycling.
