A SCOTS environmental charity has appointed an experienced new chief executive officer (CEO) as it aims to intensify its efforts.
The Green Action Trust has appointed Tom Campbell as it looks to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental inequality across Scotland.
Tom, who joined the charity in 2023 as strategy director, assumed the role of interim CEO in February 2024.
Prior to joining the Green Action Trust, Tom held CEO and director roles in various organisations and sectors.
He is notably known for creating and developing the North Coast 500, a touring route that gained global recognition.
Tom expressed his enthusiasm for addressing Scotland’s environmental challenges with pragmatism and a commitment to creating lasting change.
He said: “Having served as the interim Chief Executive for a number of months, I am pleased to have the opportunity to continue the excellent work of the organisation.
“Along with the wider team, I’m committed to creating lasting change with pragmatism, making a real difference to people’s lives while protecting habitats and encouraging biodiversity.”
He emphasized his dedication to tackling environmental injustice and expanding partnerships, stating: “We work in some of the most deprived areas of Scotland and are looking to expand our reach, but we need to ensure that’s done with the support of policymakers, private business, and of course communities themselves.”
The Green Action Trust leads the Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN), a 40-year programme funded by the Scottish Government.
Covering 10,000 square kilometres, the CSGN is one of Europe’s largest and most ambitious green infrastructure initiatives, working in 87% of Scotland’s most deprived areas.
The programme has supported the planting of over 20 million trees since its inception.
Michael Roe, chair of the board of trustees at the Green Action Trust, commented on Tom’s appointment: “We are delighted to appoint Tom as our permanent CEO.
“He understands the rich history of the charity and our extensive record of delivering substantive regeneration through both the CSGN and Green Action Trust.
“He also recognises our potential to do more and expand our reach through extending and strengthening our partnerships with local authorities and private enterprises that are aligned to our mission.”
