“It’s older than me”: Tesco worker discovers 24-year-old Cheestrings whilst clearing out store’s warehouse

A TESCO worker has discovered 24-year-old Cheestrings whilst clearing out one of the chain’s warehouses.

The anonymous employee made the discovery whilst installing new shelving – finding the packet trapped between a column and the old shelving.

The still-sealed string cheese packet has a best before date of the 7th of June 2000, making it over 24 years old.

Still in its now grimy, retro packaging the Cheestrings look very different from what’s on the shelves of today.

The cheese strings were nearly a quarter of a century old.
The cheese strings were nearly a quarter of a century old.

An image of the employee’s discovery shows both sides of the Cheestrings packet of four caked in dirt and dust.

The clear section of the outer packaging is filthy, making it hard to see through, but one of the nearly quarter-century old string cheeses can just about be made out through the grime.

It surprisingly still looks in good condition with no mould being visible on the cheese itself and seems to maintain a normal colour.

The employee also happened upon some tinned food and a few items of clothing but was left shocked when one of their colleagues opted to take the Cheestrings home with them – hoping that it wasn’t to be used as a snack.

The unnamed employee shared the snap to social media yesterday, writing: “What’s the oldest thing you have found in store?

“I found this recently when clearing our warehouse, dated 2000, it’s older than me.

“Was still sealed and one of [my] coworkers took it home for some reason, hopefully not to feed to anyone.”

The post has since received over 240 likes and more than 80 comments from users left rather concerned by the fact the cheese still looked in remarkably normal condition.

One user joked: “Do the colleagues count? I think some of these gals go back to Victorian times.”

Another said: “24-year-old processed cheese sticks… nom nom.”

A third added: “When we had a refit, there were tons of old [point of sale] under the shelving, a lot from the 90s. Also found a few mummified rats which was lovely.”

Another commented: “Bit worrying they’re still ‘cheese’ coloured. Can’t be good.”

A fifth wrote: “Was cleaning behind a till once and found a bag of mixed vegetables that had literally turned into brown water. No signs of vegetables in the bag, just the soup.”
