A MEDIEVAL castle complete with its own moat is offering deep pocketed house-hunters the chance to own a piece of history for a whopping £1.1m.
Thurland Castle dates back to the 11th century and is thought to be one of the “most historic” residential properties in the UK.
Set in the Lune Valley, Lancashire, the property was once owned by Sir Thomas Tunstall, who was knighted at Agincourt, but now exists as seven separate properties.
Now, over 600 years on from Sir Thomas’ ownership, a section of his stately home is now up for grabs.
Though only a single wing of the castle – the Viking Wing – is for sale, the lucky buyer won’t be struggling for space with the property offering 3,700 sq ft across three floors.
The Grade II listed building provides several modern and historic features, not least of which is the moat surrounding the property.
The lucky buyer will also have their piece of history secured for nearly 1,000 years, with the lease on the castle not set to run out until the year 2999.
The castle offers ten acres of communal grounds and gardens, four bedrooms, three bathrooms and four living rooms.
If the moat wasn’t enough, further security is provided by the sturdy stone battlements encircling the entire castle and the large, gated entrance accessed by a bridge across the water.
Listing agents Savills write of the historic castle: “A rare opportunity to own part of a Grade II* listed castle set within 10 acres of parkland complete with moat extending to over 3,700 sq ft.
“The property enters into a magnificent entrance hallway with an attractive turning staircase.
“The entrance hall leads into the impressive 23’1” living room, with stone hearth and log burner, high ceilings with ornate cornicing and floor to ceiling windows and French doors.
“An expansive private walled terrace with commanding views over the castle grounds and access to the moat gardens.
“To the left of the hallway lies the traditional kitchen breakfast room which has been timelessly designed with modern appliances beautifully appointed around a central island.
“The kitchen is framed by stained glass windows. The kitchen leads through to the spacious dining room with picturesque views.
To the first floor there are four generously proportioned bedrooms. The principal suite is designed with customised furniture and a modern en suite with separate bath and shower.
“Bedroom two (the original Chapel) also benefits from an en suite with shower. The remaining bedrooms are served by the house bathroom.
“Externally The Viking Wing comes with a double garage with an electric car charger, two parking bays and ample visitor parking.
“Residents have access to the substantial communal gardens and tennis court.”
One house-hunter was amazed upon spotting the listing and shared it to social media yesterday with the caption: “A semi-detached defended by a gatehouse, inner moat and outer moat.”
The post received over 115 likes and more than 30 comments from stunned social media users.
One user said: “I hate it when the outer moat gets breached, and you don’t have an inner moat.”
Another joked: “This is a matter of personal responsibility.
“You were all told not to rely on the English Channel, and yet some of you still think you can get away with just the one moat. For shame.”
A third commented: “A leasehold that costs you over ten grand a year above your mortgage etc? Insanity.”
Another wrote: “The games room has a bar, the study has an entire wine cellar. Someone knows how to prioritise their working from home.”
A fifth added: “£10k a year in service charges. Mostly for moat maintenance.”
