STAFF and students from the University of Dundee’s School of Dentistry had plenty to smile about as they participated in a rare academic tradition this weekend.
All Dental and Dental Therapy students passed their exams on first attempt, meaning the Dean of the school was presented with a pair of white gloves at this year’s graduation ceremony in Caird Hall – a long-standing tradition in the industry.
2024 marks the first white glove year since 2019 and Professor Philip Preshaw’s first since joining as Dean in 2021.
It is only the seventh time students have managed the feat since the turn of the century.
Last month, Dundee’s School of Dentistry also topped the Complete University Guide for dentistry courses for the second year in a row.
Professor Preshaw said: “The presentation of white gloves is a tremendous honour for a Dean, but it is ultimately testament to the hard work and abilities of the students and staff of the School of Dentistry.
“Traditions such as this are part of what makes this field of study so wonderful to be a part of and the presentation will act as a reminder of a truly exceptional year.
“Just last month we were named the top university for Dentistry in the UK for the second consecutive year. Having a white glove year on top of that achievement further demonstrates why we are the best at what we do.
“On behalf of the entire School of Dentistry, I wish our new graduates the very best of success in their careers.”
