A BRIT shopper has called for a boycott of supermarket giants Tesco after discovering bags of carrots on the shelves that were grown in Israel.
Lukas Slothuus was out at the shops on Wednesday when he stumbled across the packet of root veg, marked with the standard information such as its best before date.
Lukas was left fuming when he noticed the carrots originated in Israel though, prompting him to take to social media to vent, branding them as “grown on stolen Palestinian land”.
His frustration sparked debate online though, and his claims that shoppers will “start boycotting” the supermarket chain received limited support.
A snap of the carrots does indeed show the orange veggies in their bag, complete with a printed square at the bottom marked with important information.
The best before date is visible just above a line that reads, “Grown in: Israel” and further info that reveals they were grown by “G. Shluhot”.
Lukas shared the picture to social media on Wednesday with the caption: “Hi Tesco, why are you selling carrots grown by settlers on stolen Palestinian land?
“Do you know how many people will start boycotting you if you don’t stop doing this?”
The post received over 33,000 likes and more than 9,300 comments from social media users left divided over the issue.
One cheeky user said: “Thank you for the pro tip. Shall never purchase carrots anywhere but Tesco now.”
Another added: “Tesco is a supporter of Israel. Always has been. It’s on the boycott list. Shop in Asda or Aldi.”
A third wrote: “How many will start boycotting? A big fat zero. I would purposely buy these. Grow up.”
Another commented: “Change of subject, but isn’t the UK a pretty good place to grow carrots – as opposed to shipping them halfway across the world (whilst charging for carrier bags because climate change and the environment…)”
