Mum frantically begs for police over fears of gunmen in Birmingham tunnel – but “gunshots” turn out to be revs from boy racer’s car

A MUM who frantically begged for police to be called over fears of gunmen inside a tunnel saw her fears unfounded – as the “gunshots” turned out to be revs from a boy racer’s car.

The incident unfolded in Birmingham, West Midlands on the A38 when traffic began to build up causing a jam inside a tunnel.

A group of yobs, seemingly bored, apparently began to rev their car engine whilst sitting in the traffic, causing their exhausts to pop and bang loudly, echoing through the tunnel.

The sounds were misconstrued by at least one frantic Brit mum though, who left her vehicle and ushered her kids away frantically, believing the noises to be gunmen shooting at motorists.

The woman was left terrified.
The woman was left terrified.

Video shows an unidentified cameraperson filming the traffic jam at the mouth of the tunnel, as dozens of motorists stand by their vehicles, trying to get a peek at the cause.

One woman, dressed in a blue shirt and matching shorts can be seen storming up through the static traffic with her nervous kids in tow.

Clutching a phone to her ear, the woman can be heard almost in tears as she begs: “Please ring the police, they’re shooting mum, they’re shooting.”

She runs past the camera in terror as one man follows soon after in an effort to reassure her, saying: “No they’re not.”

The footage then cuts to a perspective of a car full of blokes seemingly inside the tunnel, offering an apparent explanation for the “gunshots” heard by the terrified woman.

One of the boy racers at the wheel of the Volkswagen they’re sitting in then opts to give his engine a rev, causing a series of short, sharp pops and bangs to echo through the tunnel.

Horns can be heard blaring outside and the passenger recording their actions sticks his camera out of the window to reveal the lengthy queue of traffic in front of them.

The footage was shared to social media yesterday with the caption, “Garri fadh marer” which translates from Bengali as: “Cars are farting.”

The video received over 535,100 likes and more than 7,000 comments from social media users who found the woman’s terror hilarious.

One user said: “Are we going to ignore that this woman called her mum to call the police.”

Another added: “It’s a car exhaust, no one is shooting anything.”

A third replied: “Who phones someone to phone the police for them?”

Another commented: “Oh god that mum scared her kids for no reason.”
