SCOTS house-hunters have been offered the chance to snap up an entire castle on a picturesque western island for the same price as a two-bed London flat.
Wester Cames Castle on the Isle of Bute dates back to the 1500s and offers the lucky buyer four storeys of historic housing.
Set on the coast of the renowned island, the baronial tower style castle is a snip at just £475,000.
Offering three bedrooms, a sprawling lounge and a winding spiral staircase that leads right up to a turret room at the top, the castle boasts 1,599 sq ft of space for the lucky buyer.
The castle will also offer the buyers a large garden, lawn, off-street private parking and a wood burning stove for heat in the winter months.
The property is listed by Savills, who wrote: “Wester Kames Castle dates from around 1500 and was once the seat of the Spens family.
“By 1895 it formed part of the Marquess of Bute’s estate, and only the ground floor was standing.
“The 3rd Marquess of Bute commissioned the architect Robert Weir Schultz to rebuild the tower in 1897.
“The junction of the original ruin and the 19th-century rebuilding is marked by a line of brickwork.
“Schultz’ attention to detail was delivered in a sympathetic restoration, resulting in a convincing Baronial tower.
“The tower stands four storeys high, with a five-storey stair tower at the northwest. Wester Kames is a Category A listed building.
“The accommodation comprises four bedrooms located on the upper floors with the principal bedroom occupying the fourth floor exclusively.
“The cosy kitchen with AGA, dining room and utility room are located on the ground floor and the formal drawing room occupies the entire first floor, benefitting from a splendid fireplace with woodburning stove and incredible views over Kames Bay.
“Wester Kames Castle is surrounded by open countryside and is in close proximity to the sea. The garden is around two acres in size and is mainly laid to lawn.”
One keen-eyed house-hunter spotted the listing yesterday, sharing it to social media with the caption: “Castle for the price of a London two-bed flat?”
The post has since received over 100 likes and more than 500 comments from impressed Brits.
One user said: “On the plus side you get to wear a black cape, only show yourself at night, speak in a mysterious Hungarian accent and scare the locals by ominously staring at them through the tree line.
Another added: “Lush, I’m putting the EuroMillions on for next draw.”
A third replied: “I never understand why people see far, far away from other people as a downside. I live on a council estate; I’d kill to live on an island.”
Another wrote: “Unconvinced due to the drawbacks, then saw the master bedroom fireplace. Or Shrine of Magnificence as it will now be called.”
Unfortunately, excited buyers may have had their hopes dashed as Wester Cames Castle is currently under offer.
