Aberdeen motorists are being asked to prepare ahead of introduction of LEZ

ABERDEEN motorists are being urged to prepare ahead of the low emission zone (LEZ) coming in to force in just under a month.

Concentrated around Union Street and the surrounding streets, the zone measures slightly under 1km2, representing 0.5% of the total city area.

The Let’s Clear the Air campaign has been developed by Aberdeen City Council and Getabout to provide information for motorists once the zone is enforced from June 1.

A spokesperson for Let’s Clear the Air said: “With just four weeks to go until the LEZ becomes operational, this is a good opportunity to remind motorists to double check if their vehicle is compliant.

“Clearly marked routes and online videos will show motorists how to navigate their way around the city centre.

“The overarching aim is to help make the city centre a cleaner, greener and healthier place to live while still being accessible.”

It is estimated only around 14% of vehicles in the local area do not comply with the LEZ, while most city centre car parks can still be accessed without infringement.

Financial support will be available to eligible businesses and sole traders to help with the costs of ensuring their vehicles meet the standards through the LEZ Retrofit Fund.

In line with Scottish Government policy and existing LEZs in other cities, Aberdeen’s zone is being introduced to reduce health risks by improving air quality in the city centre.

Air pollution affects 9 out of 10 individuals living in urban areas, killing 2,500 people in Scotland each year.
