Holy coo! Highland cow sculptures to be showcased along with work from hundreds of students in Dundee

A SCOTS university in Dundee is inviting the public to a free viewing of original student artwork at an open exhibition next month.

The University of Dundee’s Art & Design Undergraduate Degree Show 2024 will be available from 25 May to 2 June.

Six-foot tall sculptures of fluffy hybrid highland cows will be on display at the Matthew and Crawford Buildings in the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD).

Ewan Douglas smiles for a photo with faceless highland cow sculptures.

Ewan Douglas, a fine art student from Forfar was inspired by the highland cows to create his bovine sculptures.

The artist is looking forward to visitors meeting his ‘coos’.

Mr Douglas said: “I’m delighted that audiences get a glimpse into my work ahead of the show.

“I’m even more excited for them to see it presented very differently when the full installation is ready.”

The undergraduate degree show contains animals, AI, apps, and more from the work of over 400 students.

Mr Douglas added: “Without giving too much away, my work looks at Scotland and the often-paradoxical nature of identity and stereotype.

“There appears to be quite contradictory representations of Scottish identity and with it stereotypes both from outside and inside the country – romanticism versus reality.

“The sculptures are a small part of my work that represents that.”

The works cover a range of creative disciplines across multiple media and genres, from art, architecture and animation to illustration, jewellery, textiles and product design.

Professor Anita Taylor, Dean of DJCAD, said: “The 2024 Degree Show provides a unique opportunity to meet our latest cohort of graduates and to experience and enjoy the vitality and variety of their work and their creative and technical accomplishments.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone to celebrate and support our graduates and their achievements as we launch their future careers.”

Opening times are Monday to Friday 12.00pm-20.00pm, and Saturday to Sunday 10.00pm-16:00pm.

Viewers can also access student work online at the Art & Design Undergraduate Degree Show webpage, which will launch on the days leading up to 25 May.
