SCOTS locals have been left outraged after learning that a popular shopping centre was using a CCTV camera in the baby changing rooms.
Amy Mitchell shared her disgust after taking her three-year-old son into the changing room at the Livingston Designer Outlet in West Lothian on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old spotted a sign informing customers of the camera put in place amid security concerns in the premises.
However, Amy has now urged other parents to boycott the toilets after her complaint to the centre’s management team.
An image shows Amy standing in front of a mirror in the toilet, on which is stuck a laminated sign that reads: “Livingston Designer Outlet. CCTV in operation.
“Images are being monitored for the purpose of maintaining the security of premises the prevention and investigation of crime and in the interest of good estate management.”
In the mirror’s reflection are two toilets and a baby changing mat behind Amy.
Amy took to social media on Tuesday to warn parents, writing: “Livingston Designer Outlet.
“If you’re a parent, I’d boycott the toilets up beside Vue Cinema as they think it’s acceptable to stick CCTV in the baby change.
“Spoke to the deputy manager who informed me they don’t face the toilets, only the inside of the door to monitor who’s going in and out – if that’s the case put a camera outside the toilet?
“By the way, the CCTV notice isn’t even on the outside of the door, you’re only informed by this piece of paper once you’re actually in there.
“There’s no excuse to stick a camera in any toilet – especially one where children are.”
The post received over 610 likes and more than 1,300 comments from parents were left sickened by the post.
Karris Uttley wrote: “I was actually using this toilet with my niece the other day and didn’t notice the sign until I was walking out and had no idea what to even do, thinking they have basically got a video of me and my two-year-old niece doing the toilet.”
Ola Biesiadecka claimed: “That’s pedophilia. Need [to] make criminal charges.”
Sara McCarrison commented; “This has made me f***ing raging. If it’s still there, someone get sellotape and stick toilet roll over it. F***ing disgusting.”
Kerris Smith added: “This should be a police matter. I feel actually sick. Why would you ever need CCTV in a baby change? Makes me ill to think what is really going on.”
Ellie Jenins wrote: “I’d advise going to the desk beside the toilets downstairs to complain, show them the evidence etc. and be firm. It’s bloody disgusting.”
Amy added in the comments: “I literally spoke to the deputy manager face to face and was told the camera is there to watch antisocial behaviour by teenagers.
“Sorry but that’s no excuse at all to put a camera in a baby change.”
A spokesperson for Livingston Designer Outlet said: “‘We are aware of concerns raised regarding the location of CCTV installations within the centre.
“We are committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all our visitors and staff and are reviewing any concerns raised regarding the use of CCTV.”
