England fans fume over Nike’s “woke” decision to add “playful update” to new strip’s St George’s Cross

ENGLAND supporters have been left fuming and calling for kit manufacturers Nike to sack designers who altered the St George’s Cross on the new kit.

The strip, which was launched on Monday ahead of Euro 2024 in Germany this summer, promised to “celebrate football heroes of the past with a modern twist”.

Many fans however were outraged after spotting the change to the England flag on the back collar of the kit.

The traditional red cross with white background has been replaced by a multi-coloured cross featuring streaks of light and navy blue with pink.

The shirt, which will cost an eye-watering £84.99 for an adult replica and £64.99 for a child’s top, sparked outrage yesterday after being shared across social media.

Nike Football tweeted the launch of the new kit and made specific reference to the “new” flag alongside a picture, writing: “A playful update to the St. George appears on the collar to unite and inspire.”

Many England fans were unhappy with the new kit and labelled it as “too woke and too expensive.”

A post on social media asked: “Thoughts on the ‘playful update’ Nike have done to the St George’s cross on the back of the new England shirt?”

The post received over 1,000 likes with hundreds of comments from passionate fans who were fuming over the manufacturer’s decision to tamper with the centuries-old flag.

One said: “Avoid, too woke, too expensive.”

Another added: “Embarrassing, disgraceful.”

A third replied: “Embarrassing, Nike Football should sack anyone who was complicit with this idea.”

Another commented: “Horrendous.”

England head to Germany in the summer looking to go one better on their home heartache at Euro 2020 where Gareth Southgate’s men lost on penalties to Italy in the final at Wembley.

They will face Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia in Group C where they would be heavily favoured to finish top.
