Scots data-tech programme is set to ‘unleash the power of data’

CREATIVE INFORMATICS is inviting visitors of the Edinburgh Science Festival to immerse themselves in the world of AI and virtual reality (VR).

The Scots research and development programme supports creative professionals in Edinburgh and South East Scotland, to explore how data can create new ‘ground-breaking’ products, businesses and experiences.

In partnership with the science festival, Creative Informatics will be celebrating the end of their funded programme by showcasing the latest developments in data and digital technologies.

An interactive exhibition called ‘Unleashing the Power of Data’ will be held at the National Museum of Scotland.

One exhibit, created by Bear Hammer, includes a VR obstacle course through digital landscapes; while the work of Ray Interactive allows vistors to make music through an app that “transforms phones into magic wands”.

Adults can also experience why Scotland has a global reputation in the video games, film and TV industries, through a data-driven evening at Summerhall, part of the festivial’s Night Out programme.

Since 2018, Creative Informatics has worked with over 3,000 businesses and individuals to explore data business opportunties. A total 210 new products, services and experiences have been created from this programme.

Director Melissa Terras, Professor of Digital Cultural Heritage at the University of Edinburgh, said: “We’re really excited to be celebrating the achievements of the Creative Informatics programme at this year’s Edinburgh Science Festival.

“Our events have been specially curated to highlight some of the extraordinary work developed through our programme – from innovations in gaming and audio production to artistic creations that push the boundaries of how we think, feel and interact with the world around us.

“These events and exhibits showcase the incredible Creative Informatics community that has been built over the last five years, whose practice, products and networks will form a lasting and supportive legacy for creative professionals across Edinburgh and South East Scotland”.

The ‘Creative Informatics: Unleashing the Power of Data’ exhibit will run from March 30 to April 7, in Hawthornden Court at the National Museum of Scotland.
