Scots shocked as Glasgow City Council seek new chief exec who will be paid more than the Prime Minister – for only 35 hours of work a week

SCOTS have been left shocked after Glasgow City Council posted a job advert for a role that will see the successful candidate earn more than the Prime Minister – for only 35 hours’ work a week.

The opportunity comes amid a flurry of budget cuts announced by the local authority, including potentially 450 teaching jobs being axed over three years as part of a plan to save £27.8m.

The council are seeking someone to fill the role of chief executive, a job that pays between £200,618 and £209,817 per year – or approximately £115 per hour.

The job advert was panned by Scots online yesterday, who slammed Scotland’s biggest local authority for the “scandalous” salary on offer.

The massive salary for the chief exec comes with a contract of just 35 hours of work a week and pays more than most residents of the city earn.

After tax, the lucky successful candidate can expect to take home nearly £10,000 a month and will be earning well over £100 an hour in their role – and more than current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The Glasgow City Council offering seems to be the highest in the country with the whopping £200,000+ paycheck far exceeding other Scottish council bosses.

The salary will far outstrip the job’s counterpart in the capital with City of Edinburgh Council boss Andrew Kerr earning around £175,000 a year.

With the closing date of March 3 fast approaching though, any jobseekers better get their applications in quickly.

A screenshot of the job advert was shared to social media yesterday with the caption: “There is a vacancy in Glasgow City Council for the role of Chief Executive and the salary is up to £210k.

“That’s more than the First Minister of Gaza. No wonder the council is cutting services.”

The post has since received over 700 likes and more than 90 comments Scots who vented their frustrations with the local authority.

One said: “35 f***ing hours a week, I’m going to guess this has already been earmarked for a ‘friend’ (crony) of whoever is hiring.”

Another added: “They’d be better off employing 21 part-time street cleaners. That would transform the place.”

A third commented: “That’s way above any UK Government ministers including the PM (not that Sunak needs it).

“Really do have to wonder how they arrive at these salary figures – lower down the ladder people have performance-related pay, they should try that at the top.”

Another replied: “These positions should not carry a salary anywhere near this absorbent amount, these people are running our councils like a business instead of running the council to provide services for our citizens.”

A fifth wrote: “That’s scandalous.”
