Green Day leave punters stunned with surprise performance in London pub

ROCK band Green Day left punters stunned after the band turned up for a surprise performance in a cosy London pub.

Will Gamble and his pal headed along to The Marquis in Covent Garden, Greater London last night after receiving a sneaky tip-off that the band would be there, and wasn’t disappointed.

The performance came after the band’s drummer, Tre Cool, announced on social media that the band had landed in London and were looking to “have some fun”.

He teased in a video: “Right now, Green Day is in London, looking to have us some fun there. If I was a fan, I wouldn’t make plans. Keep all your [mobile phones] plugged in.”

True to their word, the band appeared at the surprise location, to the delight of 27-year-old Will, who took the opportunity to record the special appearance.

The footage shows lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong sitting on a wooden chair with an acoustic guitar strapped to his shoulder.

The pub appears to be completely full of fans who are anticipating the exciting setlist.

Armstrong addresses the packed pub, saying: “Okay, we’re playing. We’re going to be playing some songs.”

His next sentence is drowned out by the crowd’s cheers and applause before the 51-year-old cheekily introduces the band as though they were unknowns.

The clip then cuts to Armstrong as he sings the well-known song Basket Case, with the audience loudly singing along as cameras flash.

The clip then hilariously cuts to drummer Cool standing and singing All by Myself to the audience – who chuckle at the creepy lyrics, “Was thinking of you. I had an erection.”

He then sheepishly glances around as bandmate Armstrong chuckles and strums along.

The camera then cuts to the audience cheering for Cool’s solo as Armstrong and his audience chant the drummer’s name in approval.

Will shared the amazing footage to social media yesterday, joking: “A pretty good cover band at the local in London tonight”.

The clip received over 37,000 likes and more than 310 comments from fans left stunned by the band’s sudden appearance.

One person jested: “It’s incredible how much they sound like Green Day.”

Another said: “Imagine going for a cheeky half after work and Green Day turn up.”

A third quipped: “Wow. Hope they keep performing. They could really make something of themselves in this industry.”

A fourth added: “Why am I never in the right watering hole at the right time?”

Speaking to Will today, he said: “So, my friend had a tip off from a good friend close to the band that the show was happening at a bar at Chandos Place.

“We actually walked into the wrong pub initially and sat in The Harp a few doors down being like, ‘Hm, surely it can’t be here?’

“It turned out, we were over-excited and turned into the first pub on the road of The Marquis.

“We drank our pints quickly and walked into the Marquis at about 7pm where there was a sign saying ‘Busk ‘Till Dawn @ 9pm.’

“There were four other people at the front – one of which had been tipped off after bumping into Mike Dirnt’s [co-founder of Green Day] wife earlier that day that it was there.

“A person at the front then put it on Reddit and everyone found out.

“Then at 9pm, Busk ‘Till Dawn came on and played some covers and at 10pm, Green Day walked out – with no setlist and were asking my friend Jamie at the front what songs to play.”
