A SCOTS junior football club have thanked a lone young supporter after he took on the elements to bring the noise at their latest match.
Downfield Junior Football Club faced Lochee Harp on Saturday in a Midlands League clash at their ground in Downfield, Dundee.
The club has recently welcomed a number of younger fans who seemingly bring a loud atmosphere with them, complete with drums and chants.
However, Saturday’s bucketing rain seemed to put off the majority, leaving one brave soul to take on the elements and keep the atmosphere going at Downfield Park for the early season encounter.
The team posted a picture of the young lad on social media standing behind one of the goals dressed in a grey tracksuit.
The youngster seems undeterred by the lashing rain, as he stands beating a large black drum in support of his side.
The youth’s encouragement worked as Downfield cruised to a 5-1 win over Lochee Harp in front of their home fans.
The club took to social media post-match to thank their “ultra” for “flying the flag” for the club despite the inclement weather.
Downfield posted on social media last week, writing: “Just the one ultra today to fly the flag and bang the drum, however the heavy rain didn’t put him off. Well done young man.”
The post received over 1,000 likes with dozens of people quick to praise the youth for his actions at the game – including the offer of being bought a season ticket for his dedication.
Stephen Tosh said: “That’s amazing mate, that shows dedication, what a great image for the club, do me a favour guys, get that lad a season ticket and The Downfield will pay for it.”
Jay Herd said: “He carried that drum around to the stand on his own when it was battering down.”
Joshua Lapper said: “For me this is exactly what football is about.”
Brian Alexander joked: “He supports the best team in Dundee.”
Alexander Anderson quipped: “MOM (man of the match) the day so he was.”
Saturday’s result leaves the club sitting third in the Midlands League table with 21 points, three points off Broughty Athletic FC after eight games.
Speaking today, a spokesperson for Downfield said: “We as a club have been encouraging young kids back into Downfield Park to watch Junior football free of charge since we took over the club.
“We generally have around 20 to 30 kids attend our home and away games.
“However for this young lad to attend on a wet miserable night on his own and show his support for his local club is an outstanding effort for a guy of his age and means so much to the club.”
