Shocking video shows moment couple high-tail it out of restaurant in brazen dine-and-ditch

A SHOCKING video shows the moment that a couple high-tail it out of a restaurant after eating without paying.

The unnamed couple dined at Thai restaurant Sawadee in Brighton, East Sussex earlier this month, when they decided to skip the bill.

Footage of the incident was captured on CCTV by the restaurant who are now hoping that other restaurants will avoid the pair, who avoided paying for a lunch that cost £38.90.

The video begins with the two customers being welcomed into the restaurant and directed to a seat near the window.

The footage then fast forwards to the waiter delivering the food after the couple ordered the set menu for two.

The video continues with the couple chatting and seemingly enjoying their food as more customers come and go.

However, the customers become shifty in their manner because whilst speaking, turning around several times to check if staff are looking.

The woman then packs her possessions up and confidently walks out of the front door whilst the man, looking more concerned, double checks behind him before leaving.

The two then run out of the front door and across the road.

However, the restaurant also has cameras on the outside of the building, which managed to capture the pair sprinting down their escape route on the side street.

Another angle which overlooks the entrance shows the same waiter coming outside in a futile attempt to locate the pair, as he looks perplexed by their illegal actions.

The video was posted to social media by the restaurant on Saturday, where it has received over 32,000 likes and more than 1,100 comments.

One user wrote: “That’s sad.”

Another added: “If you’re broke don’t come out to eat. Simple.”

A third said: “That’s so embarrassing.”

Another commented: “Sat by the door for a reason.”

A fifth replied: “Can you imagine having a criminal record for this?”

Another wrote: “Tiktok do Your Thing!”

Speaking today Sawadee’s restaurant owner said: “First starters were served and when finished, the main course was served.

“It was a very hot sunny day in Brighton, we were working in the kitchen and didn’t have a clue until the server asked if we had seen the customers.

“We found out after checking the cameras what happened.

“After three or four days we had a young waiter starting work with us, and he actually edited the video and put it online.

“We are surprised by the number of viewers and support, we received phone call and text messages from people who know them – however our intention is not to report to the police or catch them.

“We of course don’t want them to keep doing it to other businesses..

“Sawadee Brighton is a small Thai restaurant in Kemptown, Brighton established for 22 years so we got very upset at first, then we thought of making a video so that they can’t get away with it.”

Sussex Police have been approached for comment.
