A MOTORIST has captured the terrifying moment a car hurtled towards him in a bid to escape the police – on the wrong side of the road.
Joe Anderson filmed the heart-stopping footage on his dashcam whilst heading southbound down the A461 near Dudley in the West Midlands last week (15 NOV).
Video shows the 30-year-old coming off a roundabout and driving along the bypass behind several other cars in the right lane.
The motors in front then begin to slam on their brakes and swerve over into the left lane.
A black SUV then appears in view – heading into Joe’s direction as he speeds along towards oncoming traffic.
Firefighter Joe tries to move slightly to the left lane to avoid a head-on collision but is unable to get in due to other vehicles.
The SUV ends up mounting the kerb on the central reservation which he ends up straddling as he continues to drive in the wrong direction.
Several police cars are then shown racing after the dangerous motorist on the correct side of the bypass.
Speaking today (MON), Joe, from Horsham, West Sussex said: “It was definitely a shock but I’m used to dealing with high pressure situations with my daily job but it took a minute to realise what had happened and just natural instinct kicked in.
“I pulled over a couple miles down the road to let it sink in, I just couldn’t believe someone could be that selfish to endanger life like that.
“It was more of a surprise, it didn’t really sink in until after and it’s not something you would ever imagine would happen.
“Luckily almost everyone managed to get out of the way, apart from the three vans on the roundabout unfortunately for them. Luckily nobody was harmed or killed to be honest.”
West Midlands Police issued a statement relating to the chase last week, saying: “Three people have been arrested in connection with more than ten robberies following a police chase in #Dudley yesterday.
“At around 12.33pm, officers spotted a car on Duncan Edwards Way that was suspected of being involved in an armed robbery in #Bridgnorth.
“The car failed to stop before it deliberately rammed police cars, drove at a traffic officer and deliberately hit a police motorbike.
“The suspects’ car was tactically brought to a stop preventing further damage and risk to the public. Fortunately no one was seriously injured, but excessive damage was caused.
“Three people were detained and taken into custody.
“A 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of three police officers and conspiracy to commit robbery.
“He will also be questioned in connection with 11 robberies committed across the West Midlands and West Mercia between July and August.
“A 23-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery, while a 52-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.”
