Dopey driver gets rescued by tractor after driving onto sandy Hebridean beach

A DOPEY driver had to have their car rescued from a Scots island after driving onto a white sandy beach and getting stuck.

A woman was pictured standing beside the stranded green Mini Cooper on Horgabost Beach on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides last week.

The local coastguard team and fire service had to be called to try and free the motor from the deep white sand.

However, after having no luck, a safety cover was put on top of the car until a tractor was able to come by and wedge it out.

Scots have hit out at the motorist and branded them an “absolute idiot” for driving onto the beach in the first place.

HM Coastguard – Western Isles, Skye and Lochaber posted an image of the stranded care on social media on Friday.

They wrote: “Incidents, week ending 19th August, on Wednesday 17th Harris Coastguard Rescue Team and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service tasked to a car stuck on the beach on Horgabost.

“Safety cover provided until vehicle recovered by tractor.”

The post attracted comments from people frustrated with the seemingly brainless actions of the driver.

One said: “Why would anyone do this especially with a car park right next to the beach?”

Another wrote: “There should be a fine for this inconsiderate and reckless behaviour.”

A third fumed: “These absolute idiots need fining for this, it’s ridiculous.”

Another Scots islander posted a photograph in another local group showing the woman standing beside the car while holding her hand up to her head on the day the incident happened.

They wrote: “Warning to visitors and locals alike.

“(This was seen by a friend, at Horgabost, today). Please do NOT drive your vehicles onto the beaches.

“You risk getting stuck, and depending on state of tide your car will sink/float away/be filled with salt water, sand and fish and be completely ruined.

“It’s not possible to have signage on every part of our coastline so common sense has to prevail. Stay safe folks.”

The post attracted over a hundred shocked reactions along with dozens of comments from fuming viewers.

One said: “Thick as the castle walls.”

Another wrote: “Would have served them right if the tide had come in. Just cant believe some peoples stupidity.”

A third commented: “Apart from the obvious stupidity it’s totally antisocial to do this. You expect beaches to be traffic free zones.”

While one person added: “Such a beautiful beach, why anyone would want to drive on it is beyond me.”

This isn’t the first time this summer that a driver has found themselves stuck on a beach in the Scottish Hebrides.

In June an Audi driver was left with nowhere to go after their tyres sunk into the wet sand at Port Stoth on the Isle of Lewis during high tide.

A local crofter came to the rescue and managed to remove the vehicle with his tractor before the tide returned.
