Baseball team forced to call time on mascot’s Twitter takeover

A US baseball team were forced to call time on their mascot taking over their Twitter account after he got himself in a pickle by posting a cheeky selfie.

Portland Pickles, based in Portland, Oregon, performed a quick u-turn on their mascot Twitter takeover last week after their mascot Dillon got himself into trouble.

Dillon, a giant green pickle, had taken over the club’s Twitter account at 9.35pm on Wednesday but by 9.49pm had been booted off.

Immediately after sending his first tweet from the verified account of the team, Dillon posted an image, captioned: “New phone who dis (sic).”

The image shows Dillon wearing his Portland Pickles uniform and reclining back with just the top part of his green fingers poking out from the bottom of the screen.

However, the image itself shocked viewers who thought the mascot was being mischievous and trying to appear as if he was showing off the pickle’s package.

After being promptly removed from using the account by the club, Dillon’s defence was that he was just trying to post a thumbs up.

Portland Pickles tweeted on Wednesday: “We have ended our mascot takeover.

“It’s come to our attention that this photo can be misinterpreted as a disturbing image.

“Dillon would like to go on record and say that he was trying to give his fans a thumbs up.”

Dillon’s risque selfie received over 15,000 retweets and 69,000 likes.

Thousands of social media users comment on the post, making puns about the pickle’s predicament.

Chris Phillips said: “Is that a pickle in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?”

Rich Meyer said: “Is that your finger?”

Zach Beaman said: “Bro, put your pickle away.”

Armando Melendez said: “Looks like they got themselves into a little pickle.”

Male grooming company Manscaped, who mascot Dillon tagged in the selfie, said: “We love home runs.”

The company was one of several accounts tagged under the tweet.

The baseball team launched an investigation and jokingly said that it was a “big dill” to them.

Portland Pickles won just over half of their games last summer finishing 26-22 in the West Coast League last summer.
