Scottish Businesses will have to plan ahead due to the global chip crisis.

Currens said: “These days chips go into almost everything that’s produced.

“Even fridges need chips. Demand is racing. And a number of unique circumstances have come together to severely restrict the number of chips available.”

He added: “The thing is, it’s so difficult and expensive to manufacture chips that you can’t just open new chip making factories to meet demand.

“All of this means that there just aren’t enough chips available. And that’s going to be a problem right through to next year.”

The pandemic has led to an increase in demand for devices with chips.

The increase in demand for devices with chips comes as the pandemic made people worldwide buy electronics.

Experts estimate that people will now rush to purchase 5G phones, increasing the demand further.

More recently, chip manufacturers have been forced to suspend production, including one in America due to power shortages and one in Japan which experienced a fire.
