Irvine Welsh brands Boris Johnson a “gormless toff” over European Super League comments

TRAINSPOTTING author Irvine Welsh has branded Boris Johnson a “gormless toff” in response to his comments about the European Super League.

The Scot lashed out at the Prime Minister after he publicly criticised football’s highly debated European Super League on Twitter last night.

Johnson faulted the development of the European Super League, tweeting: “Plans for a European Super League would be very damaging for football and we support football authorities in taking action.

“They would strike at the heart of the domestic game, and will concern fans across the country.

“The clubs involved must answer to their fans and the wider footballing community before taking any further steps.”

Welsh, 62, responded by slamming the PM, claiming that his take on the highly controversial league was ingenuine and branding him “a gormless toff”.

Tweeting this morning, the Scots writer wrote: “A man of conviction. A man of principle.

“A man who has the deepest interests of the game and its supporters at heart.

“Na. A gormless toff whose advisors have told him it’s unpopular.”

The tweet has gained over 500 likes and dozens of retweets, with many users making jokes at the Prime Minister’s expense.

@BernieSutton7 wrote: “Bet he doesn’t even know the offside rule.”

@tomritchiemcfc said: “You’d think he’d be supportive of ‘breakaways’ from long-standing and credible organisations?

“Or has he already forgotten Brexit!”

@brophy_andy replied: “Probably had an alternative tweet ready to go, just in case…”

@danielb00296613 joked: “’Gormless toff’ = Perfect description of the man.

“You should be a writer.”

The European Super League is a breakaway football league which is set to be played mid weak as a rival to the current elite European competition, the Champions League.

Twelve of Europe’s elite football clubs have announced they have agreed to establish the competition, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.

However, the league has faced heavy criticism from fans and pundits as it would only allow for five clubs to enter the competition through sporting achievement.

Meanwhile, the 15 “Founding Clubs” would have their inclusion in the competition guaranteed, regardless of performance.

It has also been stated that the breakaway clubs will receive 3.5 billion Euros to support their infrastructure and investment plans amid the pandemic.
