Disability campaigner to walk 500 miles in Proclaimers inspired challenge

A MUSCULAR Dystrophy sufferer has set himself the challenge of walking 500 miles to raise money for charity.

David Gale from Lockerbie, Dumfries and Galloway, has set himself the Proclaimer’s-style challenge in aid of Muscular Dystrophy UK.

The 36-year-old, who lives with Becker Muscular Dystrophy, is a long-time supporter of the organisation, who desperately need funds during the covid-19 pandemic.

Becker Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic disorder which sees the leg and pelvis muscles weaken over time.

David, who was diagnosed at age 5, decided he wanted to set himself the challenge while he was still physically able.

However, he admitted that his condition is at a stage where the challenge will be tough, he said: “I am taking this challenge as I want to raise much-needed funds to help MDUK to get through the lockdown financially.

“If we lose our charities it could lead to further strain on the NHS. And there would be nowhere else to go for help and support.”

“Walking is getting very hard but I wanted to do something that would really push me. I hope my determination will inspire people to give.”

David has set up a Just Giving page where he explained the inspiration behind the challenge.

He wrote: “With being on the charities Scottish Council, I thought what better to use as my inspiration than the classic 1988 Proclaimers song I’m Gonna be (500 Miles).

“I have no specific target but any amount off anybody will be greatly appreciated.”

David won the Muscular Dystrophy Campaigner of the year in 2011 and The Muscular Dystrophy Scotland Saltire award in 2016.

He was also Volunteer of the year at the diverse Cumbria awards in 2017.
