Insh Island features a natural cave which at least one of its previous owners has called their full-time home.

The cave’s only allowance for “modern” living is two square holes punched through the rock to make windows.

As well as the latest in cave-dwelling, the new owner of Insh gets to enjoy complete solitude, 90 acres of land, and stunning views of the west coast of Scotland.

The island is a mile from the mainland, a journey which can only be made by private boat trip. Even then, a road journey of almost four hours is needed to get to Glasgow, the nearest big city.

The island, about 10 miles south west of Oban, is just 1.4km at its longest and about 400 at its widest.

Insh Island boasts over 90 acres of unspoiled land

Former owner David Brearley lived in the cave for 30 years, choosing that over the two ruined croft cottages nearby.

Mr Brearley, thought to be originally from London, lived there from 1973 to 2003.

Dawsons Estate Agents in Oban have described the property as: “A unique opportunity to acquire an uninhabited island in a beautiful situation  on the west coast of Scotland.

“Extending to just over 90 acres the unspoilt island is mainly covered in rough grass bordered by rocky outcrops and cliff faces with a natural cave and with the ruins of two croft cottages.”
