THE UNIVERSITY of Dundee has opened a new joint research centre with North Eastern University (NEU), China, and welcomed almost 120 new students on to a new double degree in Biomedical Engineering which will be delivered as part of a Joint Educational Partnership (JEP) between the two institutions.
Staff from Dundee have been in China this week to launch the new programme and for the formal opening of the Sir Cuschieri Skills Centre, named after Professor Sir Alfred Cuschieri, one of the world’s leading authorities on medical skills and technologies, who was among those in attendance.
Professor Cuschieri and colleagues from Dundee including Professor Ghulam Nabi, Professor José Fiadeiro and Professor Zhihong Huang delivered masterclasses for the new cohort of students who have registered for the new degree programme in Biomedical Engineering.
The programme will be taught by academic staff from both Dundee and NEU. It is a four-year programme with the final year of study taking place in Dundee. At full strength the programme will host almost 500 of the next generation of leading biomedical engineers, who will go on to work alongside doctors to deliver advances in ultrasound, CT and MRI scanning, and image-guided surgery to improve diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Wendy Alexander, Vice-Principal (International), led the University of Dundee delegation who have been attending events at NEU.
She said, “This new programme and the opening of joint laboratories builds on the collaboration that has been nurtured between Dundee and NEU, and combines world-class excellence in biomedical engineering from both universities.
“This will encourage knowledge transfer with leading industry players and support top class student placements in future years.
“I have been delighted to welcome such a large cohort of new students to the University of Dundee.”
The programme is only the second Chinese Government-approved Joint Programme with a British university in Biomedical Engineering and is a recognition of Dundee’s expertise in this field.
