A THOMAS Cook worker lost her job a week after her husband’s sudden death from cancer – and now she cannot afford to pay for his funeral.
Family friends have launched a £2,000 appeal to help cover the cost of a funeral for Adrian Hawksworth, who died aged 52 within a month of being diagnosed with lung cancer.
Within a week of his death last Tuesday, Janine Hawksworth lost her job as a Thomas Cook travel agent.
The family, from Liversedge, West Yorkshire, are now struggling to pay for funeral costs and a Just Giving page has been set up by a friend.
On Just Giving Sarah Bohn wrote: “We’re raising £2,000 to support towards funeral costs and easing financial pressure at this time.”
Sarah, a friend of the couple’s daughter, Annabel, 23, added: “Posting this on behalf of a dear friend who in the space of a week, has lost her dad very suddenly to cancer at just 52 while her mum has today lost her job at Thomas Cook.
“Annabel has her first day at university tomorrow. Can we help make funeral costs a little easier for them please?”
The Page also includes a note from Annabel herself.
She wrote: “My amazing Dad, Adrian, was sadly diagnosed with cancer after already having to go through heart surgery earlier in the year.
“As a close family, myself, brother and mum as well as extended family were all here for him. What we didn’t see coming was that only four weeks after diagnosis my wonderful dad passed away after a rapid decline in health and many scary lung failures.
“To add to this, my mum works for Thomas Cook who have just gone bust. I start uni tomorrow and I want to be able to take the strain off my amazing mum who has lost her husband, job and distraction at this terrible time, all in a matter of weeks.”
Annabel, whose brother, Jake, 21, is also a university student, added today: “It came as a massive shock to us all and all of us are devastated. It’s too much to happen at once.”
Janine, 47, had worked for Thomas cook for nearly 10 years.
