TESCO customers burst into laughter when they opened a packet of crisps and discovered two tiny crumbs inside.
Ciaran Levy Hearne is filmed by his wife, Merisha, as he squeezes the packet of own-brand crisps at their home in Baldock, Herts.
But the couple end up in hysterics when, instead of getting 25g of ready salted crisps, they open the packet and find miniscule fragments.
Tesco today suggested the problem was with a weighing machine and promised the couple a full refund.
The packet came from a multipack of ‘Stockwell and Co’ Ready Salted crisps bought in the town at he weekend.
Merisha posted the video to the Tesco community page saying “thought this bag felt a bit empty… I know we all joke when buying crisps that you’re paying for half a bag of air but come on Tesco this is a bit much.”
The video shows Ciaran squeezing the packet, which is slim and shows no signs from the outside that it is full of anything other than air.
Merisha bursts out with laughter as Ciaran opens the packet of crisps to reveal just two small crumbs at the bottom of the bag as Merisha can be heard saying “oh my god.”
Merisha, struggling to hold back the laughter, then says to Ciaran: “No tip them out, how many did you get?” Ciaran then tips the contents of the packet over a bowl showing the two small crumbs.
Tesco’s online customer care team responded to Merisha and her post saying: “I am deeply sorry and concerned on how this could of happened. This is certainly not the quality we aim to provide our customers.
“I would like to have this logged and fed back to the supplier, can I ask you to PM me a picture of the barcode, best before date and full picture of your receipt along with your full name, address and email?”
Merisha today said that she started filming because Ciaran said something wasn’t quite right about the packet.
She said: “My husband said that the packet felt like it was empty so I laughed and said crisps are usually half a bag of air, but felt it myself and noticed you couldn’t hear anything when you shook it so I said let’s open it and take a video.
“We just laughed we found it quite funny.
“I sent them [Tesco] a message but waiting to hear back.”
This comes after a mother from Manchester had a similar discovery when she found just one snack in her packet of Aldi crisps.
Jade Amy from Manchester thought Aldi were “taking the p***” when she found her bag of crisps to be near empty when she filmed it.
A Tesco spokesperson said: “We have apologised to Merisha for this mishap and have provided her with a full refund. We are investigating with our supplier to find out what happened on this occasion.”
Crisp makers use automatic weighing scales to ensure all individual crisp packets meet weight legislation and empty or underweight packs are rejected.
It is understood a “rejected” packet ended up in Ciaran’s multipack by mistake but that he received the correct number of full packets.
