DRAMATIC video shows the bonnet of a car fly off at 80mph on the M1, showering the carriageway with debris.
The clip shows the bonnet of the VW Golf “explode” and soar into the air above traffic and fly above the driver who recorded the incident on his dashcam.
Paul Troth, who was driving behind, can be seen to swerve slightly as pieces of metal and plastic bounce off the road.
Paul, from Rugby, Warwickshire, captured the incident while he was driving near Nottingham in August this year but only recently shared it on a closed Facebook group.
The 48-year-old explained: “Driving down the M1 this guy in the VW Golf forgot to close his bonnet…could have been a lot worse if there were more traffic on the road luckily he had the awareness to pull to central res.”
The video shows Paul cruising on the M1 at 78mph without any interference from other cars on what appears to be a sunny day.
A Volkswagen Golf appears in shot on Paul’s right side as it overtakes him.
As the Golf begins to pull away its bonnet suddenly erupts from the body of the car and shatters into pieces as it reaches high into the air.
Splintered pieces of bonnet pepper the roadside as cars drive in towards them.
The largest piece of the bonnet is flung into the air as it glides down the motorway out of sight.
The driver of the Golf realises immediately what has happened and turns on the hazard lights and begins to break in the middle of the M1.
The video has got many people in the Facebook group debating on the Golf driver’s actions in the aftermath of the incident.
One commenter said: “What a pillock to stop there he could have easily pulled on to the hard shoulder.”
Another commenter disagreed: “I don’t know if the Golf driver could actually see anything after the bonnet struck the windscreen?”
Others were shocked by the flying bonnet.
One commenter said: “That was almost explosive! That bonnet could have killed someone.”
Another commenter said: “Golf driver needs to get to Halfords for some bonnet pins.”
Whilst another commenter replied: “I think he’ll need a new bonnet and windscreen first.”
A commenter added: “ If he didn’t have brown pants before he certainly would of done afterwards.”
