Livingston boss admits financial gulf with Celtic illuminated after champions spend £2.3 million on ‘lightbulbs’

Livingston manager Gary Holt admits the vast financial chasm with Celtic is illuminated by the fact that the Bhoys spent £2.3 million on ‘lightbulbs’, whereas he has only just been able to hire a video analyst.

Celtic showed off their new state-of-art light and sound system to supporters ahead of Thursday’s dramatic 2-1 Europa League victory over German side RB Leipzig.

On the same evening, Livingston announced that Dougie Wright had joined the coaching staff to record first team matches and provide footage on the opposition.

Livingston are having to spend their money wisely in their first season back in the top-flight, although that has not stopped the West Lothian club defying their modest financial position to record league wins over Rangers at Hibernian at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

Holt, however, knows Celtic are operating on a different level.

“Celtic spent a reported £2.3 million on lightbulbs – that’s unheard of,” said Holt.

“Fair play to them, they deserve it.

“They’ve had a run in Europe and other clubs in the league have benefited from that as well. Fair play and well done.

“But we’re trying to do the right things, we’re trying to grow, try and improve in all areas and all aspects.

“The analyst will provide information for us on the opposition and with regards to post-match analysis, so we’ll have a look at things and individual stuff as well.

“It’s about helping us and trying to make the players better.

“You have to take your hat off to everybody behind the scenes, the club and the whole staff, the board. They’re all pulling in the same direction and all want a feel-good factor about the place.

“They want people to come to Livingston and see best-practice within our working strengths.

“We know we can’t go and spend £100,000 on bibs or mundane things but we can affect certain areas.

“It’s building blocks, we don’t have a billionaire benefactor. We work with the constraints and the club backs us.”
