Photographer enhances 20-year-old Gameboy by attaching £200 camera to it

AN AMATEUR photographer has managed to enhance an old Nintendo Gameboy, by attaching an SLR camera to it.

Matthew Parrish, from Boardman, Ohio, wanted to make his Gameboy camera suitable for portrait photography after seeing people using telephoto lens with it.

Matthew used his knowledge of film, which allowed him to make the modification to his £200 Olympus OM10 camera.

He claims his enhancement has now vastly improved the photo quality of the 20-year-old Gameboy.

The 21-year-old taped the sensor to a small piece of cardboard to fit in the film exposure window from the partially disassembled Gameboy camera two days ago while waiting for his computer to update.

His friend Max Krieger, shared the images to Twitter captioned with: “holy st. Lmao, a bud of mine taped a fg SLR (single lens reflex) to a game boy camera and got this result. Happy fg halloween.

“Okay but that’s not really what he did – he opened up the game boy camera to expose the image sensor and mounted it inside the old SLR shell by taping the camera to the game boy camera.”

He claims his enhancement has now vastly improved the photo quality of the 20-year-old Gameboy.

The post has been nearly eight thousand likes with over two thousand retweets.

Matthew simply taped the sensor from the Gameboy Camera to a piece of cardboard, which he fitted into the film exposure window of the Olympus OM 10.

After his tinkering he uploaded the gameboy camera software and started to take pictures to see the result of his newly created DSLR camera

The modification now allows Matthew to take images with greater clarity than he would normally be able to make, due to the higher level of exposure.

In the images taken by Matthew there is a Orange Nintendo Gameboy Color with a picture of skeleton with a torch stuck to his head.

The Gameboy is now the main control for taking pictures after it has been taped to the Olympus Camera, which has a 50 mm lens being used for portrait shots.

Other images show each side of the contraption demonstrating how it was put together with tape, cardboard and elastic bands to keep everything in place.

He has even taken a picture of the inside to show the piece of cardboard with the sensor that has been slotted inside the camera.

However, a picture of a blonde female with glasses, which is hard to make out exactly, due to the quality of the image being quite poor was taken from the Gameboy camera without Matthew’s SLR modification.

While another image of a man with long hair, a beard and glasses that was taken by the Gameboy camera with his modification is a lot sharper and is less pixelated.

Speaking today Matthew said: “ It honestly surprised me with how well it worked. The gameboy camera uses one of the first consumer digital camera sensors which records images in black and white only.

“Photography is one of my favorite hobbies, particularly 35mm film photography.

He explains he saw other people do a similar thing on the internet using a telephoto lens but, wanted to make something more suitable for portrait photography.

He added: “I have been tinkering with things ever since I learned how to use a screwdriver.

“I broke a lot of things as a kid but I learned from my mistakes and made greater things.

“Currently I’m working on improving the design of this camera to make it easier to use.

“I have actually ordered a device online that allows me to extract the images directly from the Gameboy without any degradation to the image quality.”
