Lavish home which once belonged to former Scotland and Celtic legend on market for £1.3m

A LAVISH house which once belonged to former Scotland and Celtic legend Jackie McNamara is up for sale – for the same price he listed it at a decade ago.

Edgerton House in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian was owned by the Scots footballer around the turn of the millennium and put on the market for offers over £1,350,000 in 2008.

Yesterday (MON) the stunning B-listed property, fit for any footballer or football fan, went back on the market for the exact same price.

Photographs of the four-bedroomed home feature Ralph Lauren wallpaper, a gold painted Sleigh bed and a beautiful walk-in wardrobe suitable for any footballers wife.

Images also show a games room showcasing signed Diego Maradona, Gareth Bale and Marco van Basten football t-shirts – although sadly they don’t come with the house.

A Jamie Vardy book can also be spotted alongside a miniature football trophy in one of the bedrooms – indicating that current owners are also footie fans.

A view of the house from outside

The property, which comes with private driveway, electric gates and also a two-bedroomed “Coach house”, is being managed by estate agent Strutt and Parker.

They state: “Edgerton House is a magnificent, late Victorian detached property, situated just to the south of Edinburgh in the attractive suburb of Bonnyrigg, by Lasswade.

“The house has well balanced accommodation arranged over ground and first floors, extending to 4,112 sq ft, and this has been comprehensively upgraded by the current owners.

“The works include new bathrooms by Bagnodesign, full rewiring of rooms and exceptional redecoration throughout including wallpaper from designers such as Ralph Lauren.

“The reception rooms are ideal for entertaining and include a stunning drawing room, family room, garden room and a dining room with lavish interior decoration.

The excellent kitchen has a breakfast room and utility room adjacent and the ground floor accommodation is completed by a study, with fitted shelving, and cloakroom and WC. On the first floor, there is a magnificent master bedroom suite with a large en suite dressing room and a recently fitted shower room.

“There is a guest suite, with an en suite shower room and two further bedrooms, served by a magnificent family bathroom, recently fitted by Bagnodesign. This has a large oval bath and twin wash hand basins finished with featured mirrors and fittings.”

Strutt and Parker list the coach house, including in the price, as being ideal for entertaining or as being a potential holiday let.

Edgerton house is approached through electric gates and the drive then leads to the front and side of the house.

The stunning dining room

At the front of the house there are extensive shrub beds and mature trees including a chestnut, a large oak tree and a cherry.

There are colourful herbaceous borders, a symmetrical quadrant rose bed and a fire pit, with stone and marble seating adjacent.

And if that’s not enough bargain for your buck, a secret, concealed garden has a pond and there is a heated dog kennel with an enclosed run.

According to the Bank of England inflation calculator, £1.3m in 2008 would have been worth £1.7m last year – suggesting a £400,000 effective drop in the price.

The property is believed to be currently owned by a couple who run a financial consultancy firm based in Edinburgh.

Jackie McNamara joined Celtic in 1995 and within ten years at club won the Scottish premier League title four times and the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup three times each.

The 44-year-old later went on to play in England with the Wolverhampton Wanderers before returning to Scotland and finishing his career with spells at Aberdeen, Falkirk and Partick Thistle.

McNamara, from Glasgow, was also a member of the Scotland squad that played at the 1998 FIFE World Cup.

He moved into management with Partick Thistle in April 2011, before his appointment at Dundee United in 2013 but was sacked two years later.

He later took over as manager of York City before working as chief executive at the club.
