Shocking moment van driver is crushed by his own cargo

SHOCKING video shows the moment a van driver is crushed beneath a cage of food and drink that falls off the back of his vehicle.

The footage shows the driver lying stunned in the road with blood coming from a head injury.

The back door of the van is thought to have sprung open mid-journey and the driver stopped after he was alerted by other motorists.

Jack Myserscough filmed the incident in Bolton, Greater Manchester, on Friday, after stopping to warn the driver, believed to be David Simmons.

Jack, a driver with 1SR Prestige Car Specialists, can be heard beeping his horn for several seconds until the vehicle stops.

He can then be heard shouting at the top of his voice: “Your door. Your doors open. Your Door. Your Door.”

The driver emerges and can be heard saying: “Oh s***.”

The wheels of the metal cage appear to have slipped over the back edge of the vehicle and disaster strikes as the driver tries to push the cage back in.

The cage slowly topples over and the driver desperately tries to push higher up on the cage to stop it from falling.

The footage shows the driver lying stunned in the road with blood coming from a head injury.

Jack is then heard shouting “Oh s***” after the cage smashes the man on his head.

The man is then seen on the floor holding his head in pain while Jack then says “f***.”

The driver then rushes out of the car to the man’s aid asking if he wants an “ambulance.”

The driver is lying on the ground in his high vis vest holding his cut, with blood flowing down his head and creating a pool in the ground.

Jack is then heard asking if the man if he is “alright” before realising the extent of the injury and saying he needs and ambulance.

Thankfully, is understood the driver’s injuries were not serious.

Rob Holmez wrote: “We are all trained in safe loading of the vehicle but for whatever reason he chose not to follow the correct procedure.”

Kevin Jarrett posted: “Hope he was okay even if he made a mistake he still got hurt and products are replaced easy.”

Chris Hesketh added: “Either way you look at it he hasn’t secured his load. The door hasn’t been locked in place correctly, he’s dropped a b*****k.

“He didn’t put the hazard lights on, and lift the tail lift up to properly secure the load.

“The accident wouldn’t have happened if he’d have followed the correct procedure.”

A spokesman for SWD Media, a road safety website who obtained the footage, said: “This is a serious incident that could have been prevented had the vehicle been loaded correctly.

“Loads must be secured by a physical restraint and with the rear shutter fully open .

“It’s extremely lucky items weren’t strewn all over the road whilst the truck was moving.

“I hope the driver makes a speedy recovery and I urge the company involved to investigate this incident and review their procedures as a matter of urgency.”
