THE OWNERS of Scotland’s official “ambassadog” have revealed the country’s favourite canine mascot is battling cancer.
Golden retriever George, who was crowned the country’s first international canine ambassador two years ago, was taken to the vets last week for a routine check.
The three-year-old pooch from Glasgow, who has over 18,000 followers on Instagram, was found to have a “pea-sized” lump on his ribs.
Vets removed the growth but on Tuesday it was confirmed the lump was cancerous.
George’s owner, Victoria Rae last Wednesday said that despite the bad news, she is remaining positive because George’s prognosis looks good.
Alongside an image of showing George’s stitched up scar, she wrote: “Being Golden owners we know the only downside to the breed is them being prone to cancer.
“Due to this we regularly check George over for any lumps and last week found a tiny (pea sized) lump on his ribs.
“We took him to the vets to get it removed, thinking it was nothing but erring on the side of caution, and unfortunately found out yesterday it was cancerous.
“We love keeping George’s page upbeat but we wanted to share this to highlight the importance of checking for lumps and getting any, however small, checked and removed.
“We’re staying positive as even though it’s bad news the prognosis is good. For now, George will be getting monthly checks and the usual (very high) dose of love.”
Hundreds of fans have left messages of support on George’s page.
Eh6girl said: “Oh George! You brave, wee soldier. Sending you all the treats and hugs and good vibes for a speedy recovery.
“You’ve actually just inspired me to take action and go to the doctors about the lump I’ve discovered recently. Much love G.”

“Well done for finding such a small lump and getting it checked! I’m sure he’ll be back to strong health in no time.”
George has crowned Visit Scotland’s Ambassadog in May 2016 after beating over 200 dogs for the coveted post.
The Golden Retriever has travelled the country promoting Scotland’s natural beauty and putting smiles on a lot of people’s faces.
He was the guest of honour at this years Glasgow Film Festival in February for the UK premiere of the film Isle of Dogs.
