COMEDY – Short and Curly is slapstick silliness

BY SIMONE MEDONOS

What do you get when you cross a playful double act and a large bag of props in a portacabin? [star rating =4/5]

At first you may wonder if you made the right decision as you are presented with Blue Peter props and a tiny venue; but soon enough you are taken on a mad rollercoaster of fun and silliness.

Curly laments turning 40 in 52 minutes time and thinks that his chance of being famous is over. He wants to stay young and cool like the – not so youthful – man in the front row. Short tries to cheer him up by challenging him to prove that he was ever cool. The witty twosome then take us on a journey through Curly’s life via his various heroes and memories.

The award winning duo, Rebecca Shorrocks (Short) and Paul F Taylor (Curly) crank up the fun over the hour with amusing one liners to slapstick silliness and audience interaction. The occasional joke falls flat yet others such as the appearance of the vampire, Freddie Kruger and the Phantom of the Opera have us crying with laughter. This is raw silliness at its best accompanied by home made props and deliberately amateur costume changes.

There are many references to British pop-culture of the 80s, from Grange Hill to Orville the Duck and Torvill and Dean but our American friends still found the show fast moving and lots of fun.

From the cheesy humour to the downright ridiculous, you’ll definitely leave with at least a smile on your face.

Warning: bring tissues, as you could get wet or messy.
