Scottish dog lovers throw £300 wedding for their shih tzus

TWO spoiled Scottish shih tzus have been treated to a full wedding ceremony after six months of “dating”.

Three-year-old Chewie and his bride Brownie, seven months, had an outdoor ceremony in Glencairn Park, Ayr, on Sunday.

The ceremony was the brainchild of Shradha Lahar, 12, who even officiated at the ceremony, giving a speech filled with doggy puns.

The youngster’s mum, Pooja Lahar, owner of Brownie, helped to bring the whole event together, even sending out bespoke invites and holding a “stag and hen do” for the canine couple.

Chewie, a shih tzu and Lhasa Apso mix, was dressed in a full tuxedo, while Brownie, a Shih tzu, wore a jeweled white dress with a puffy skirt.

Pooja, 38, and pal Gillian Dickie, the owner of Chewie, spent around £300 on the event, including getting matching charms for the dogs to wear on their collars.

The dogs became close shortly after Pooja got Brownie seven months ago and met after walking in the same park every day.

Pooja Lahar, in navy blue, and Brownie, left. Gillian Dickie, wearing yellow, with Chewie, and Shradha Lahar, officiating in light pink.

Mrs Lahar and Mrs Dickie became close friends through walking their dogs together.

And, while walking their dogs over the summer, many children remarked on how cute they were as a couple and asked if they were getting married.

This sparked the idea in Shradha’s mind that the pair could actually be married, and her mum agreed.

Speaking today, Pooja said: “It was all Shradha’s idea, she was the one behind it all. She said they were too cute and they had to get married, and I agreed.

“I told Gillian, and she was a bit like ‘what?’ but she did agree to it. We even sent out invitations, they are based on language used in India when people get married.”

The adorable invites, printed on a design of dog paws told guests: “The lovely couple are going to tie their love knot on 5th August 2018 at 4pm. Please do come and shower your kind blessings on this lovely couple.”

The couple were given charms instead of rings during the ceremony

And plenty from the community turned up to see Brownie walk down the aisle, with many appearing in formal dress – and even drafting in a doggy bridesmaid for the occasion.

Shradha, wearing a long light pink gown, officiated the ceremony with a speech, filled with doggy-puns, and the pair were then given matching charms instead of rings.

The charms read “My wife Brownie” and “My hubby Chewie”, and the families also drafted up marriage certificates to make the union “official”.

Pooja said: “Both dogs were really well behaved, I think it was because they had the clothes on they couldn’t move a lot.

The families even sent out bespoke invites ahead of the big day

“It was a really lovely day, everyone from the local community got into it and was throwing the confetti afterwards.

“We had cake, the charms instead of rings and even a bridesmaid.

“We never thought it would go that far, but you know what kids are like.

“For the hen and stag do that we threw them, we invited about 10 girls and it was a nice way to say thank you to them and for us to bond.

“We had pizza, some juice and played some party games.”

Asked if the couple had consumated the marriage, Mrs Lahar replied: “The wedding happened for the love between these two, which is really different from other dogs.

“They are not going to have babies darling.”
