Street events launched as Fringe officially begins

VIRGIN Money Street Events launched today on the Royal Mile, bringing Edinburgh the most accessible Fringe ever.

 

The street was officially closed off to vehicles and opened to buskers and performers for the duration of the month.

 

The public gathered to watch the Chief Executive of the Fringe society cut through the ribbon to launch the opening, whilst standing on a welcome mat reading “In Ye Come”.

This year, the street will see over 250 shows a day.

Redevelopments will mean street events are more accessible than ever. New dedicated viewing areas have been built for those who need them, and some performances will also be signed.

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival will run from the 3rd – 27th of August.

New for 2018 is the West Parliament Square Spectacular, which takes place most days from 13:15 to 20:15, featuring some of the biggest and brightest shows at the Fringe.

Another addition is the Fringe Sunday Comedy show on the Mercat Stage every Sunday at 13:00.

Crowds gathered to watch the first performers take their spots.

The public will also notice hundreds of decorative colourful pigeons scattered around the stages, perched on shopfronts and even on St Giles Cathedral.

“The refreshed event layout and more flexible staging will improve artist and audience experience. There won’t be another free experience like it anywhere in the world.”
