A DRIVER who crawled from a high-speed car crash returned to the wreck and posed for a hilarious picture with a can of Irn Bru that also survived the impact.
Craig Dagostino’s Peugeot went through a wall and somersaulted three times before landing on its roof after he skidded on black ice.
The 28-year-old professional acrobat suffered a fractured spine, lacerations and bruised lungs.
But when he hobbled back to the wreckage five days later to recover his belongings he was astonished to find two cans of his favourite fizzy drink had survived with barely a scratch.
Despite his pain amid the scene of devastation, Craig, from Edinburgh, couldn’t resist posing up with one of the cans.
He has since downed one can of the precious, old-recipe Irn Bru but is keeping the other as a lucky charm in his fridge.
Craig was driving from Dumfries to Edinburgh on March 9 when he hit black ice at 60mph.
Craig found himself covered in blood and hanging upside down in the vehicle. After getting out, two drivers refused to stop to help and he had to walk to the nearest house in the dark to get help.
When he returned to the crash site to collect his belongings, he was astonished to find two intact cans of Irn Bru that had been loose on the back seat.
He said: “The only things that survived were my phone, passport, and the two cans of Irn Bru.
“I had a can of coke in the back too but that was completely destroyed.”
He added: “I drank one Irn Bru, but the other is still in my fridge.
“I can’t quite bear to drink it, but a severe hangover may tempt me into drinking it one day.”
Craig said he bought the cans earlier in the trip because he thought it might be his last chance to get hold of the “old”, pre-sugar crackdown recipe.
“Both cans of Irn Bru were essentially unscathed. The cans were just sitting on the back seat so luckily no Irn Bru to the head.”
Speaking about the crash, he explained: “I was going round a corner and I pressed the brake, which caused the back end to skid out.
“The car went through a wall and did three somersaults in the air before it crashed. This is what they told me, I had my eyes shut at the time and I just braced myself.”
He added: “Everything was a near miss, I was very lucky.”
Craig’s snaps show him recovering in hospital and with a nasty laceration to his neck. The crash scene pictures also reveal one of the cans of Irn Bru lying amid a pile of clothes.
He said: “The cut to my neck was close to the jugular but not too close for the doctors to be worried about it.”
On social media, Marni Lee Clarson asked: “Omg how the hell did the Irn Bru and, more importantly, you survive that? Someone is watching over you.”
Gemma Lavender wrote: “So amazed you got out of there in one piece. Luckiest guy on earth and very glad you’re ok.”
