Alex Smith insists steering Falkirk to wins is the only way he can help lift Bairns after Peter Houston departure

ALEX SMITH has confessed the only way he can help Falkirk and make the fans happy during his spell as interim manager is if he can steer the team to victories.

At the ripe old age of 77, Smith will become the oldest modern-day manager in British football when he takes charge of the Bairns against Morton.

The former Aberdeen and St Mirren boss has stepped in on a temporary basis, with players Mark Kerr and Lee Miller, following the departure of Peter Houston and his backroom team on Sunday.

Without a victory in seven league games, one of the pre-season favourites for promotion currently occupy the relegation play-off place in second-bottom.

And, after a career in the game spanning six decades, Smith is experienced enough to know that it is a results-based business, even for him as caretaker.

He said: “Right now, it’s about lifting the dressing room and lifting the club. The only way to do that is by getting results.

“That’s the most important thing – our next game. We are going to a very difficult place on Saturday, with a very good manager and very good players, but we want to win at Morton.

“And if we do that then we look to the next game and try to get another win – and get as high up as we can until the club has picked out the manager who is best suited to this club.

HOPELESS

“Everyone needs to get their levels up to where they were – and beyond that.

“And I mean everyone attached to the club – the staff who have come through this period of losing when we were expected to win, the board, who are as disappointed as anyone else.

“But mainly we need to do it for the fans. They are the ones who come here every week and want to see Falkirk do well.

“It’s our job to make them happy by winning games. We can be poor, absolutely hopeless, but if we score in the last minute to win 1-0 they will go home happy.

“We just have to find a way to win for them.

“And if you can’t win or draw, then you have to be giving 100 per cent. It doesn’t matter what team you play for – Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen, or Falkirk – you have to win football matches to make the fans happy.”
