AS Craig Levein’s return as Hearts manager is confirmed, we’ve taken a look back at some memorable matches from his first stint in charge.

February 2001

Hearts 7-1 Dunfermline

Just two months into his tenure, Levein masterminds a thrashing of their Fife counterparts. Stephane Adam, Andy Kirk and Colin Cameron all score doubles, Robert Tomaschek also nets.

August 2002

Hearts 5-1 Hibs

The Gorgie side embarrass their fierce city rivals with a 5-1 thrashing in the second game of the season. Summer recruit Mark De Vries becomes an instant fans hero after netting four. Andy Kirk is also on target.

November 2002

Hibs 1-2 Hearts

Hearts stage a memorable comeback at Easter Road after Kevin McKenna and Phil Stamp score in the final four minutes to cancel out Mixu Paatelainen’s opener.

January 2003

Hearts 4-4 Hibs

Hibs think they’ve got the game sewn up with goals from Craig James and Grant Brebner in the 89th and 90th minutes but, in an incredible ending, Graham Weir rescues a point with two injury time goals in a game that has gone down in Tynecastle folklore.

April 2003

Hearts 2-1 Celtic

Hearts end a run of 12 straight losses to Celtic as a last-gasp screamer from Austin McCann seals victory. The defeat proves costly to Celtic, who lose out on the league title to Rangers by one goal.

November 2003

Bordeaux 0-1 Hearts

Hearts stun their French counterparts with one of their best ever European results. Mark De Vries scores but they are knocked out of the now-defunct UEFA Cup following a 2-0 second leg defeat.

May 2004

Rangers 0-1 Hearts

Levein leads Hearts to their first victory at Ibrox in eight years. Joe Hamill grabs the only goal.

September 2004

Hearts 3-1 S.C. Braga

Hearts lay the foundations for a successful passage through to the UEFA Cup Group Stages with a first leg victory over the Portuguese side.  Andy Webster, Paul Hartley and Patrick Kisnorbo are all on the score sheet. They draw the second leg 2-2.
