Emergency services rush to quarry after reports of diver who failed to surface

A MAJOR emergency services operation is under way after reports of a missing diver who failed to surface.

The incident was reported to emergency services at around 10pm on Sunday, at Prestonhill Quarry, Inverkeithing, Fife.

Fellow divers alerted authorities when the woman failed to resurface after entering the water.

A diver was reported as missing at Prestonhill Quarry, Inverkeithing, Fife late on Sunday evening. The missing diver was practicing in the flooded quarry and reported as not having re surfaced.

Police and other emergency services have been on site since the early hours of this morning, and extended the cordon at 7.30am in preparation for police divers to begin a search and recovery operation.

Inspector Ian Stephen, of Dalgety Bay Police Station, said: “The incident was reported to police around 10pm on Sunday, July 9, at which time Fire and Rescue officers and HM Coastguard, along with police officers and the Police Scotland helicopter made their way to the quarry to undertake searches.

“We believe that the diver got into difficulties and failed to resurface. Further searches will be undertaken during the day, led by specialist officers from Police Scotland’s Dive and Marine Unit.

“The woman’s family has been made aware of the incident.”

Local SNP Councillor Alice McGarry said on Facebook: “There seems to be a major incident at Prestonhill Quarry tonight with Police, Fire Service and Ambulance Service attending.

“Pray God nobody has been badly hurt.

“I have heard from folk who are at Prestonhill Quarry that the incident involves one of the divers who use the quarry.

“So many folk have gone round the quarry following the blue lights. Please stay away and allow the emergency services to go about their business.”

Prestonhill Quarry has a depth of up to 11 metres at parts, and has a recent history of fatal accidents.

John Mackay, 18, from Kirkcaldy, drowned there in 2015, and Burntisland teenager Cameron Lancaster, 18, died in 2014 after falling from cliffs into the water.

The Quarry is a popular diving site, with the flooded cavern filled with cars, bicycles, sofas, lawn mowers and more, but has been criticised in the past over safety fears.

Police search teams have recovered the body of a missing diver at a flooded Fife Quarry at 10.45am Monday morning.

Emergency services had been searching for the missing woman since late Sunday evening, after she failed to resurface at Prestonhill Quarry in Inverkeithing.
