Former Aberdeen goalkeeper Danny Ward admits he is on cloud nine after saving two penalties to help Huddersfield reach the Championship play-off final.

Ward, who spent the first half of the 2015/16 campaign on loan at Pittodrie from Liverpool, kept out spot kicks from Sheffield Wednesday pair Sam Hutchinson and Fernando Forestieri in the dramatic 4-3 shootout victory.

The 23-year-old, who is also on loan at the Terriers, ran the full length of the Hillsborough pitch to celebrate with the travelling supporters and admitted he was thrilled to play his part in setting up a Wembley showdown against Reading.

He said: “It’s absolute elation tinged with a bit of relief. Penalty shoot-outs are nerve-racking things and it’s a cruel way to go out but when you win them in the manner we did, it’s an immense feeling.

“To save a penalty at any point in a shoot out is massive, it can change the momentum.

“When you save it and you know you’re going to Wembley, it’s a bit of a relief.

“It’s amazing. We’ll enjoy this moment, we have every right to.

“We’ll dust ourselves down and get ready for 90 minutes that could define a season, it can change peoples’ lives and change the history of a football club.”

Speaking to htafc.com, he added: “With the special group of people we’ve got, we’ve got to be confident we can get over the line at Wembley.

“We’ve got to remember there’s another game, one final step that we all hope to make.”
