Frozen out at Celtic under Brendan Rodgers, Nigeria defender Efe Ambrose thrilled to prove himself at Hibs under Neil Lennon

HE MAY have been frozen out under him and forced to move on in search of football but Efe Ambrose insists Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is a ‘father and a friend’ to him.

Ambrose has been named the Ladbrokes Championship player of the month for March as he stands on the verge of helping Hibs land the title and promotion back to the Premiership this weekend.

It is a top-flight he has not featured in this season after failing to play a single league game under Rodgers.

But the Nigeria internationalist, who has scored once in eight impressive outings since being reunited with former Hoops boss Neil Lennon at Easter Road, is still convinced Rodgers has made him a better player.

The defender said: “He didn’t ignore me when I wasn’t playing.

“He’s a great man, he’s a father and a friend to everyone. He treats everyone as family and everyone as equal.

“It’s not just the players playing in the team that really matters, it’s the squad that really matters to him. Everybody has to come together for the team.

“He gives credit to everyone, even if you’re not playing. If you need help he’s there to listen to you.

“He’s always there to help, he’s always there to teach you and to correct you.

“For me, he has been a very great man and a great help to me in my career.

LEARNED

“I have learned from him and the coaches, so he has been great for me.

“But, coming here, I have been delighted, nothing more than to just show what I can do and what I have learned.

“The best way to show that is to play games, which I couldn’t get at Celtic but I can get here.”

Hibs know a victory over Queen of the South on Saturday, coupled with anything less than a Falkirk victory, will finally land them the title.

And Ambrose insists he will be thrilled to have played a part in returning the capital club to the upper echelons of the Scottish game.

He added: “It is a possibility to achieve another medal in Scotland

“A medal is a medal and for me to win another one is a great feeling. It would be another one to add to my collection.

HISTORY

“But winning the medal is not the most important thing.

“It is what it would mean to give something back to the club and the fans who have stood by Hibs for the past three years.

“They made history by winning the Scottish Cup last season.

“And the most important thing for Hibs now is to get out of this league and that is what comes to my mind.

“It would be nice to win this Championship and give something back to the everybody who has put everything into this club.

“The only thing I can give back to them is to win this Championship and take them back into the Premiership where they deserve to be.”
