For sale – Sainsbury’s trolley rescued from river – with top speed of 50mph

A MOTORISED shopping trolley with a top speed of over 50mph has been put up for sale on eBay.

The former Sainsbury’s trolley has been fitted with a 340cc engine – giving it a better power-to-weight ratio than most family cars.

A video of the amazing machine shows it kicking up dust while doing “doughnuts”.

The creation combines a standard Sainsbury’s trolley – pulled out of a river and still with its distinctive orange handles – and a Honda petrol engine.

Bidding for the trolley starts at £620

Its creator – known only as motormaster5000 or “Jasper” – is selling the vehicle to raise cash for charity Water Aid. With seven days to go, bidding stands at £620.

Jasper, from Wantage, Oxfordshire, fitted bike handle bars sit at the front of the trolley along with the brake and accelerator controls.

The seat is made from a cut-out section of the basket at the rear. The wheels and tyres come from a go-kart and foot rests have been welded underneath.

A video of the trolley shows it flying down a country lane and flames belching from the exhaust whilst it’s being revved.

In another clip it can be seen wheel spinning on a dirt track kicking up a cloud of dust as it attempts to do a doughnut.

The kart is then shown speeding around a bend with the occupant wearing no other safety equipment apart from a full-face motorbike helmet.

The video has been viewed over 41,000 times and received almost 100 comments, with most expressing their amazement at the invention.

Jasper’s advert reads: “I built the trolley about three years ago before going to university.

“It uses the engine, transmission and axle from a 340cc Honda go-kart so it is fairly quick – I have measured it at 51mph.

“I built the trolley with the intention of setting the world record, which was 44mph at the time. This increased to over 70mph after the project was finished so I gave up.”

The ad admits: “Unfortunately the trolley is not in the same condition as pictured- it has been left in the garage while I’ve been at university and not seen much use.

“When I last used it (about a year ago) everything worked as far as I can remember with the exception of the nitrous oxide kit, and at least one tyre.”
