THOUSANDS of Buckfast fanatics have crashed a retail website with orders after they launched a Buckfast Easter egg.
D-Bees Lurgan’s launched the newest addition yesterday on their website and have already received more than 2,000 orders from across the UK as well as Canada and New Zealand.
Branded with Buckfast’s iconic logo, the over-18 set comes with a miniature bottle of the tonic wine alongside a milk chocolate egg.
The “Easter Buckie Chocolate Egg” also includes a Buckfast pen, lighter and fridge magnet – all for a “special introductory price” of £9.99.
The company currently only ships to addresses across the UK and it’s unknown whether the eggs will be made available worldwide following the massive interest.
Since posting images of the egg on their Facebook page, the shop, based in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, has been inundated with interest.
And thousands of fans have left messages praising the off-licence for their newest addition.
Kevin Darby wrote: “Game changer or what.”
Sean Pearson said: “Perfect egg for Easter.”
And Lynda Williams wrote: “I would definitely buy a couple of these.”
However, the Easter egg has attracted some criticism over promoting Buckfast which has in the past been associated with anti social behaviour.
Dave Mitchell said: “Is this for real? It’s vile stuff and as an ex alcohol support worker I can vouch for it tendency to turn people into a******.”
Between 2010 and 2012, the former Strathclyde police force said Buckfast was mentioned in almost 6,500 crime reports.
Earlier this year, a Scottish youngster was told to stay away from Buckfast after he was sentenced to a community payback order after he repeatedly punched and kicked a man before performing a Nazi salute.
When delivering his sentence, Sheriff Brown said that of those inside Polmont Young Offenders Institute in Stirling, “43 per cent of their inmates had drunk Buckfast before their offence.”
A spokesman for D-Bee Lurgan’s today said: “The website crashed. We have taken 2000 orders already.
“Hopefully the website will be complete tonight and payments and shipping prices available.”
