Former Celtic and Norwich City striker Chris Sutton admits he would be ‘shocked’ if Canaries manager Alex Neil was appointed as Mark Warburton’s successor at Ibrox.
One-time Hamilton boss Neil was made favourite for the vacancy among some bookmakers earlier this week and is said to be on a short-list alongside ex-Scotland manager Alex McLeish and former Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett.
But Sutton believes there is little chance that Neil will be appointed at Rangers.
Sutton said: “Is there any truth in it, the story has come from somewhere but is Alex Neil going to leave Norwich? I don’t think so.
“The standing is that he’s under pressure, he went through a tricky period, saw it through but there’s always this lingering thing in the background with Alex Neil about the huge pay-off and whether that kept him in a job.
“I would be shocked if he ended up at Rangers but it does look like Ross Wilson is going to be involved (as director of football), that’s what we’re all hearing.”
Speaking to BT Sport, he added: “The most important thing from Rangers’ point of view is that they have a clear plan, a clear way forward.
“Forget about this season, they just need to settle down and build, get a plan in place.
“If it’s a director of football and a head coach, that’s absolutely fine.
“You can’t have any this nonsense that happened this season next season. It’s going to be a slow rebuilding process, patience and a chairman who is true to his word.”
