Clyde striker Peter MacDonald admits he is hoping to disappoint Ayr United manager Ian McCall for a third time after twice turning down the chance to play under him.
McCall tried and failed to bring MacDonald to Patrick Thistle when the vastly experienced marksman was at St Johnstone, and was also interested in the 36-year-old after taking on the reigns at Somerset Park.
MacDonald’s striking prowess is likely to be the biggest threat to Ayr in this afternoon’s Scottish Cup fifth round clash with the player having netted 17 goals in 29 appearances for Barry Ferguson’s League Two side this term and the marksman is keen to leave McCall frustrated yet again.
“I knocked back a month’s loan at Thistle and I did end up playing sooner than expected.
“Then he tried to sign me for Ayr when I left Dundee but I thought the best option at that time was to stay full-time and to play with Morton.
“It was at the end of my Dundee time when I came back from my cruciate injury. My time was up at Dundee and I had a few clubs wanting me and I was fortunate that I had options.
“He didn’t try to sign me in the summer again so I must have done something wrong.
“It’s nice to know that your wanted by another manager previously, he’s a top guy and he’s coached at the top level in the game so it’s nice to get a wee compliment like that with him saying that he tried to sign me.
“I’ll see him before and after the game, he’s a great guy and he’s got good patter.
“But hopefully I can frustrate him again on Saturday.
“Hopefully we can put on a good account of ourselves and run them close.
“The cup games are always ones to look forward to and we’ve got a winnable tie there I think.
“We’re going to go there as massive underdogs but we hope we can cause an upset.”
Despite reaching the twilight of his career, MacDonald insists the cup still has a special appeal.
He added: “I’m absolutely buzzing for Saturday. There will be a decent crowd although we’re not going there with any expectations. Can we cause an upset? Yeah, definitely.”
Ayr manager Ian McCall, meanwhile, insists being one game away from a possible money-spinning quarter-final clash is huge for the Honest Men.
He said: “It’s a place in the last eight and potentially a draw that would make our club and our owners, particularly for me Lachlan Cameron, a bit of money. It’s a big game.
“It’s an opportunity that maybe Lachlan won’t lose money this season if we manage to win and get a decent draw.”
