Dunfermline defender Callum Morris hungrier for Scottish Cup success after Hibs’ ‘roly poly goalie’ dashed Dundee United dreams

CALLUM Morris saw his Scottish Cup dream snatched away last season by the ‘roly poly goalie’ – but insists it has only made him more hungry for success.

The Dunfermline defender was left heartbroken when Dundee United found Conrad Logan in inspired form for Hibs in their semi-final clash at Hampden last April.

Two games later, the Tangerines’ misery was complete when they were relegated from the Premiership by bitter city rivals Dundee.

Morris has admitted Alan Stubbs’ decision to play an out-of-shape Logan in the semi-final was greeted with delight in the United dressing-room as the Tannadice men wrote off the former Leicester City goalie.

But their pre-match jibes came back to haunt them as the Irishman turned in a stunning display of shot-stopping and won Hibs their cup final berth in the penalty shoot-out.

Morris, who rejoined Dunfermline last month after his summer move from United to Aberdeen failed to pay off, said: “I played in the semi-final with United last season and we should have won that one.

“It does still stick in the throat a bit. You want to go and pick up the trophy.

“Their keeper was the hero on the day, I’ve never seen anything like that before. He was actually brilliant in the whole game and kept them in it.

“The boys in the changing room were saying ‘we’ll get a bagful, he can’t move’ and stuff like ‘get in shots from everywhere’.

“And then we had about nine one-on-ones and he saved everything! He was like the Cat, shifting all that weight around.

“And then he saved the penalties as well. I couldn’t believe it.

“That’s just the way it is, if you take things for granted it’s going to come back and bite you on the backside.

“Maybe it was kind of written that Hibs would go on to win the cup, but it was still a sore one.

“And then we got relegated the weekend after at Dens. It wasn’t great.

“But it just makes you hungry to go on again and hopefully lift up a cup.”

Dunfermline will reach their first Scottish Cup quarter-final since 2009 if they can see off Premiership visitors Hamilton Accies on Saturday afternoon.

Until last weekend’s 2-0 defeat to bitter rivals Falkirk, the Pars were buoyed by an unbeaten run stretching back 11 games to early November.

And, with Accies having managed just two wins in their last 15 matches, Morris is adamant it would not be an upset if the Fifers emerged victorious.

He added: “Everyone wants to test themselves against teams in higher divisions and this is a good opportunity because there’s not that many places between us and them.

“They’re still a decent team and they do play good football, but we’re confident we can get a result, especially being at home.

“There’s not much difference between the full-time Championship teams and the Premiership teams.

“With what’s happened with Hibs and United and Hearts and Rangers in recent seasons, it’s kind of bolstered the division. It wouldn’t really be an upset.

“I don’t think there’s much of a difference, there’s just a label and you get yourselves on Sportscene more often.

“We’re confident and, if we can spin Saturday into a positive, it’s given us a kick up the backside.”
