Morton striker Gary Oliver admits even he has been taken surprise by Tons’ charge into the Championship play-offs – but is desperate to make sure they stay there.

In only their second season in the league, Jim Duffy’s side sit comfortably in third place having only been beaten once in their last 13 matches.

The Greenock outfit face a hat-trick of matches on the road against Ayr United, Queen of the South and Raith Rovers and the former Hearts marksman Oliver is keen to keep Ton in the thick of the promotion action.

He said: “At the start of the season we had a few draws and actually got beat off Ayr United. I was not expecting us to be where we are now.

“We’re on a good run and we have good players so we’ll see where that takes us.

“It’s a difficult period coming up, it’s all teams that are fighting around about us in the league but hopefully we can keep our form going.”

Morton’s reward for beating Falkirk in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup last week is a clash with Rangers on February 11 and Oliver is licking his lips about the prospect of facing his boyhood heroes.

He added: “It’s hard not to think about the Rangers game. I supported them as a wee boy and I actually scored against them last season at Ibrox.

“I used to watch a lot of their matches when I was younger, my dad and my family are all Rangers fans.”

Ayr manager Ian McCall, meanwhile, insists Morton boss Duffy should be recognised for turning his side into promotion contenders.

He said: “It just shows you how bizarre football can be, earlier in the season Morton came here, we won 2-1 and the Morton fans were shouting for the manager to go.

“A few months later and Morton are one of the form teams in Scotland and Jim Duffy would get my vote for manager of the year.”
