A REMARKABLE video has captured the moment a Maltese driver decided to go off road – by driving down steep stone steps in the capital Valletta.
The motorist behind the wheel of the 4×4 appears to be taking inspiration from The Italian Job by bumping down steps in the World Heritage Site.
At the start of the clip, captured by a nearby pedestrian, the silver Suzuki Vitara can be seen at the top of two flights of stone stairs.
It begins to move down the first set of steps very slowly.
As it approaches the second set of stairs, two pedestrians appear at the bottom, ready to walk up.
But bemused by what they are seeing, they take a step back, and allow the car to roll to the bottom.
The driver then turns straight on to the road at the bottom, and drives on, whilst the two onlookers watch in shock.
The footage was captured last month and posted by Bad Drivers Exposed, a Facebook page that documents bad driving on the island.
They posted it with the caption: “Car takes shortcut and drives down the ancient stairs in Valletta Malta.”
It has since been viewed over 200,000 times, almost half the population of the island, and shared 2,000 times.
Social media users were shocked after seeing the clip.
Bernadette Coupland wrote: “Perhaps they need to install a hand rail down the centre of the final set of steps.”
Stella Diamond said: “It’s a shame his car never overturned with him in it I would have laughed my head off.”
Ian Welch joked: “That’s what 4x4s are for.”
Whilst Pierre Delicata quipped: “Testing its new suspension.”
Valletta is a historic city, containing buildings and infrastructure from as far back as the 16th century.
It was officially recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980.
