Scots challenge Hungary to a “square go” over jokes

SCOTS have challenged Hungary to a “square go” after it emerged they are the butt of Magyar humour.

A map of who laughs at who in Europe went viral at the weekend and it shows that Hungarians joke about Scots being tight and drunk.

Scots Twitter user led to backlash by linking to the map with the caption: “Who the f*** do Hungary think they are?”

The tweet received over 6,000 likes and retweets, and Scots joined Sandy in expressing their outrage.

Brogan Tant wrote: “Obviously we’re setting up a square go with them.”

Steve Young said: “Aye f*** that I’m no going Hungary again.”

A thread was also started on Reddit’s “Scottish People Twitter” page, titled: “Time to invade Hungary lads”.

Some social media users tried to explain the reasons for Scots being the butt of the jokes.

One Twitter user wrote: “Told this to a Hungarian girl at work. She said they do slag us a lot. For being tight and drunk.”

Another user, on Reddit, added: “All the Hungarian jokes about Scotland are to do with us being tight.”

The map itself is based on a blog called Europe Is Not Dead, written by Frenchman Romain Seignovert, who lives in Brussels and collects jokes told by people from all over the continent.

According to his blog, a popular Hungarian joke about Scotland is: “Nowadays the Scots do not play bagpipes to frighten their enemies, they do it to annoy their neighbours.”

The blog also states that anti-Scottish jokes are common in Romania, with one ‘classic’ being: “McManus donates a lot of money to charity but likes to remain anonymous. He even forgets to sign his name on the cheques.”

Asked for a comment, Hungary’s consulate in Edinburgh appeared to suffer a sudden sense of humour failure.

A member of staff said: “I will not be commenting.”

Hungarians are not the only Europeans to laught at the alleged meanness of Scots.

Germans joke: “How did the Grand Canyon originate? Answer: A Scottish tourist lost a 50-cent piece.”

Germans even have a word for something that is dirt cheap – Schottenpreis – literally ‘Scotsman’s price’.
